Wearable is the next big thing in mobile computing

I am often being asked “What do you think is the next big thing in mobile computing?“. I am professionally involved in the AutoID and mobile computing industry for quite a long time and have seen many changes and new technologies in these years. What I see lately is bigger and bigger customer demand for wearable technology. Usually they are looking for solutions that would allow physical workers in supply chain to freely use their hands, sight and hearing without too much technology distraction. They are looking for the solution that also provides full safety of workers.

There are two human senses that we use to augment reality in warehouses and manufacturing plants to achieve digitized workers: voice and vision! We use a headset with a microphone together with a wearable computer and a wearable bar-code scanner. With these technologies workers become fully immersed into digital layer and we often call them “digital workers“.

At the beginning digital workers are a bit scared of all the technologies they need to wear but soon they are all proud and start to feel confident. At the end workers are more productive and they like to be productive – who doesn’t?
